A new video showcasing successful delivery of a 560-bed critical care hospital in Wales was released this week. A key member of the construction team, CHt  delivered all mechanical, electrical and public health services, building management systems, specialist communications systems, CCTV, access controls, intercoms and intruder alarms for the pioneering Grange University Hospital which opened to patients in November 2020, four months earlier than scheduled.

The project team had also been able to hand over 50% of the hospital in April 2020 in response to a request from the Health Board to create healthcare provision in its covid-19 preparation plans. Handing over the ward space 12 months ahead schedule was achieved by identifying productivity efficiencies, targeting resources to ward areas, completing works out of hours and staggering shift patterns.

The project was delivered using modern methods of construction, and harnessed the experience of Laing O’Rourke’s specialist businesses, complemented by  local subcontractor expertise. CHt Project Leader Owain Dobson said: “Over a year after the early handover of the wards space at The Grange University Hospital, it’s great to look back and reflect on what was achieved under such difficult circumstances. The way the whole team pulled together makes me immensely proud and goes to show what can be delivered by having a clear and common goal and through true collaboration.”

Key facts

  • CHt installed 241 fully serviced bathroom pods ahead of programme
  • Over 1,500 prefabricated service modules streamlined the onsite installation - these included 54 riser modules, 633 horizontal modules, 34 valve sets, seven pump skids, and 58 air handling units weighing between two and five tonnes each
